AVOCADOS : A SUPERFOOD

Avocados, also known as alligator pear are a stone fruit with a creamy and smooth texture packed with many nutrients. It is defined as a large berry fruit with a single seed. The yellow green flesh inside the fruit is eatable and has many health benefits. It is naturally nutrient dense fruit which contains more than 20 minerals and vitamins with healthy fats.

Avocados due to its superfood properties have become an incredibly popular food among health-conscious individuals.

Avocados are loaded with nutrients

Avocados are a great source of vitamins like vitamin C, E, K, and B-6. They also have folate, magnesium, potassium, lutein, beta-carotene and omega-3 fatty acids.

Almost all the calories from Avocado come from fat but it is all healthy and beneficial fat which is good for your body.  Eating healthy fats support skin health, enhances the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients. It is required by every cell in the body.

Keeps your Heart healthy

Although avocados contain lot of fats but as mentioned earlier, majority of the fat in avocado is monounsaturated fat, which helps lower LDL (“bad”) cholesterol. Including one Avocado a day in your diet has proven to have an effect in lowering LDL.

Great for your Eyes

Avocados contain high amounts of lutein. Lutein is a carotenoid and has natural antioxidant properties. It helps in maintaining your eye health as you age. Lutein is not produced in ample amounts by human body to fight age related macular degeneration. So, including Avocados will benefit your retina and your overall eye health.

Protects against cancer

Avocados are loaded with folate. Folate is proven to protect the body against undesirable DNA and RNA mutations during cell division. According to a research, phytochemicals extracted from avocado can prevent the growth of precancerous and cancerous cells. It can cause the death of cancer cells and nourish immune system cells called lymphocytes. Also, phytochemicals can decrease chromosomal damage caused by cyclophosphamide, a chemotherapy drug.

Good for Pregnancy

Folic acid is considered very important in pregnancy as it can prevent many birth defects. It is required to make new cells. During early development of pregnancy, folic acid helps form the neural tube of the baby. Avocados are a great source of folate and thus good for pregnant women.
